There are many advantages of a
multicultural society. It
leads to create an open minded population and people start to see situations
from another point of view. The society can enjoy different arts, foods, cultures,
religious beliefs, habits, practices and ethnic rituals.
However there still have
disadvantages with living in a multicultural society. Social conflict occurs due to
differences in religious or cultural beliefs. It has been noticed that conflicts arose mainly during
financial crisis or due to lack of social development programs. Sometimes, love
and friendships made strong bonds among any ethical groups.
Canada is the leading nation that can
be called multicultural societies.
Minority Influence
The power of social influence
includes the individual’s power to influence the group. Social history is often
made by a minority that sways the majority. Were this not so, women would still
lack the right to vote, communism would not have spread beyond Marx and Engels,
and Christianity would be a small Middle Eastern sector. Technological history,
too, is often made by innovative minorities who overcome the majority’s
resistance to change. The railroad was first viewed as a nonsensical idea; some
farmers even feared that the noise from trains would prevent hens from laying
eggs.
To understand better how minorities
can sway majorities, social psychologists in Europe have investigated groups in
which an individual or two consistently expresses a controversial attitude or
an unusual perceptual judgement. One repeated finding of this research is that
a minority that unswervingly holds to its position is far more successful in
swaying the majority than is a minority that waffles. Holding consistently to a
minority opinion will not make you popular, but it may make you influential,
especially if your self-confidence stimulates others to consider why you react
as you do. Although people often comply publicly with the majority view, they
may privately develop sympathy for the minority view. So even, when a minority’s
influence is not yet visible, it may be persuading some members of the majority
to rethink their views.
As the life of Mahatma Gandhi, in
India as well as in South Africa, powerfully testifies, a consistent and
persistent minority voice can sometimes sway the majority. Gandhi was often vilified and imprisoned. But
his appeals and facts on behalf of nonviolence in the struggle for Country’s
independence eventually won that independence.
